ADHD Hummingbirds?
As I poured the boiling water over just the right amount of sugar to make more nectar for our flock of hummingbirds, I was struck again by the similiarities between hummers and those of us with ADHD.
Proud mom of an ADDiva-in-training
“Big victory today. My daughter, who’s ADD and also has learning disabilities (her processing speed and symbolic logic, which is used in reading, are low) was supposed to flunk last year.
Low blue light for better sleep?
I’m always on the lookout for possible ADHD “solutions” — or more accurately, products and ideas that will support ADHD in a positive and encouraging light.
So, I was de-LIGHTed to find a product that blocks the blue LIGHT waves that can suppress melatonin production, which in turn can make it difficult to go to sleep at night.
Follow your path
A striking young woman read my name tag at the ACO (ADHD Coaches’ Organization) conference last weekend and did a double take. “You’re Linda Roggli?” she exclaimed. “You’re the reason I’m here,” she said. I looked puzzled for a moment, then she explained.
Three stages of ADHD in women
It has been my professional observation and personal experience that are three distinct stages of ADD and ADHD recognition and acceptance for women.
Stage One: Nuts and Bolts – OMIGOSH, I have ADD! When women are diagnosed with ADD, there is often sigh of relief (“Ah, so THAT’s what it is. Thank goodness it has a name!”) followed by a dig-in-and-fix-it determination (“Let me try everything and see what works”).
“Don’t drive while distracted…”
“Don’t drive while distracted.”
OK, so it was just a tagline at the end of a car commercial. What made it wry for me was that the car was a Ford FOCUS.Can you believe the ADD perfection in that?
Take off your makeup and let your ADD shine!
I began my life as an undercover ADDiva with my first tube of Maybelline mascara that I bought with furtively saved allowance, away from the disapproving eye of my mother (whom I later tutored in the fine art of not poking out an eye when applying the jet black lash builder). At the time, I thought I was merely transitioning to adulthood. But it was more than that.
Keeping ADHD meds in perspective
know it’s heresy for an ADHD coach to say this, but I semi-agree with her. Study after study shows that addiction rates actually fall dramatically when ADHD meds are prescribed and administered appropriately (e.g. a drop from 81% drug abuse to 23% which is near the rate for the general population).
But when your ADD has kept you up all night and you have to go to work, it’s awfully easy to pop an extra stimulant to wake up
Talking to teachers about ADHD vs behavior issues
I recently came across a post on an adult ADHD site from the mother of a teenage son with ADHD. The school had enrolled him in a behavior class because the school didn’t see ADHD as a learning disability, but as a behavior problem.
Ack! Here’s my response:
“ADHD is NOT a behavior issue, although it can manifest outwardly in some rather annoying ways. Like interrupting a conversation because your ADD brain wanders onto a more interesting topic. Or making paper airplanes during class because the teacher is boring. And ADD brains get bored easily –
Commitment vs ADHD
‘ve made a lot of commitments in my life. Lose weight. Get in shape. Write my book. Walk the dogs more often. Put money in savings. Go to bed early. Finish one project before I start another. You can see how my ADHD brain might rebel, or at least argue with, commitments like these.
To me, a commitment has always been BIG and SERIOUS and RIGID. Especially rigid.
